When I tell people I’m a Pilates instructor, I get a lot of interesting reactions. People who practice and love Pilates quickly tell me they admire my “dream” job. But many people who are less familiar with Pilates ask a lot of questions and make a lot of assumptions.
They say things like, “Oh, I’ve never done Pilates, it’s like yoga right?” or “I can’t do Pilates, I’m not flexible enough”. Some think Pilates is only for women, and get surprised when I tell them Joseph Pilates - the creator of this method - was a very athletic German man who designed Pilates for men in the military. And still others mention having tried Pilates once or twice, but never really “getting” it.
When you decide to get healthy and have a happy life, you have endless ways to approach it. Getting back into an exercise routine, going on a “diet”, following all the “shoulds” and setting goals. All of these things tend to focus on what you can control outside. Like the food you eat, or how much you workout. But the real transformation happened for me when I realized there’s a missing piece: what’s going on INSIDE, our mindset.
Many people have this question when they are new to Pilates: “Which is better - mat or reformer Pilates?” Sometimes they will say, "I love reformer” or "I only do mat." So which is better? Let's start by looking at each and what makes them different.
Here’s a quick breakdown for you to decide whether Mat or Reformer Pilates is best for you:
I’m so happy to share with you my ultimate self care & beauty routine. It’s taken me years to figure out what works best for my body and I think I finally nailed it! :)
I've probably read 99 articles on how to stay on track and stick to your healthy living goals and routines. I experimented and learned a lot of tips and tricks about this topic during my journey.
Let me start by saying that I'm not a nutritionist or a health professional. So, everything I share is based on my personal experience and research. Honestly, it took me years to figure out what works for my body.
My food philosophy is very similar to my fitness method. I love simplicity, quick with maximum benefits.
WHAT IS MY DIET LIKE?
As I've share on my IG page before, I eat a mostly whole food, plant based diet with some fish and eggs (sustainably sourced whenever possible.)
I practice eating mindfully and according to my body's circadian rhythm. I’m also enjoying intermittent fasting for about 12-14 hours during the week.

This is very embarrassing to admit but I used to be a miserable fitness junkie... I was obsessed with everything health and fitness related. I’d read anything and everything I can find about new trends, latest workouts, celebrities’ fitness routines. I’d easily spend an hour just looking through #fitspo posts on Instagram comparing my body to other girls… I remember feeling so confused, lost, and very unhappy in my own skin.
1. Tidy up your space!
Decluttering and creating a clean space really does boost your productivity. My best and most productive days start with tidying up my apartment. It is so simple and magical! :) First things first, tart by making your bed, then declutter and clean your desk/work space. Since I work from home most days, I also tidy up the living room so there is no distraction.
4 years ago, I moved across the world (from Turkey) to go to grad school in San Francisco. After finishing the school, I realized that I didn't really want to work in my field (Linguistics - Teaching English) and that I wasn't very passionate about my job. I started to doubt every decision I made about my life and career, ended up going through a tough "quarter life crisis".
Hello hello! :)
It's a sunny Sunday morning here in San Francisco. And I'm so happy to be back to my blog with 5 amazing book recommendations! These books helped me so much in my personal growth, spiritual practice and having a positive perspective on life. If you are looking for some books to curl up with this season, definitely give one of these a try.
I completed my Pilates teacher training in San Francisco about a year ago. I still remember exactly how I felt before and during my training. TERRRIFIED, EXCITED, CONFUSED, LIT UP, INSECURE, JOYFUL, PROUD. These cocktail of feelings still come up everyday.
I believe skincare starts with skin and sun protection. I will admit, it took me about 25 years to finally accept that SPF is an everyday "must", just like a moisturizer. So, I'm really happy to see that there is more awareness around this issue and some brands are doing an amazing job of creating quality formulas.
Happy mornings start with a rested mind and body. So, the first step is to go to bed early and get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night. If you get good quality sleep, you will wake up energized and ready to start the day. I usually go to bed around 9pm and look forward to cozying up in my Buffy comforter. It's so soft and luxuriously fluffy just like my cat haha. Do you see him in the picture below? :)
1. Get enough sleep.
I'm finally sharing my skincare routine that some of you requested. :) It's all about simplicity, minimalism and "out the door in 5 minutes". I believe in protecting and perfecting my actual skin instead for covering it with lots of makeup. As I started to take on this approach, I'm needing even less and less makeup on a daily basis – which I absolutely loveeee! So, keep on reading if you like an easy routine for fresh, natural, glowy skin.
Actually, I wasn't planning on writing a reflection post this year or share any of the lists below when I wrote them down in my notebook in a hotel room in New York on New Year's Eve. But then I saw a "January Feelings" post I had written exactly one year ago. I thought I should keep writing these every year – even if it's just for myself and no one else reads it. It's pretty amazing to look back and remember your feelings and thoughts on life one year ago.
If you've been following my story along , I started my career in Pilates and wellness not too long ago – with lots of fear and hesitation. I'm now a certified Pilates instructor based in SF and still continuing my Pilates education to keep learning and growing in my career.
With this blog, my aim is to be able to share the benefits of this amazing mindful movement with all my friends and readers far and close. :)
